Black author spotlight - From the Air Force to the Art of Words: The Journey of J.O. Ballance

J.O. Ballance is a versatile writer whose life experiences form the foundation of her storytelling. With a career spanning military service, leadership, and creative expression, her journey is a testament to the power of resilience and reinvention. For J.O., writing began as a therapeutic outlet—a safe space to process emotions and life’s complexities without burdening others. Through this process, she discovered her gift for narrative and imagination, culminating in her work, Mirror Mirror.

Raised in a middle-class household with her parents and siblings, J.O. is the proud mother of a son and shares her life with her beloved 3-year-old rottweiler, Blu Infinity. Blu’s name reflects her favorite color, blue, and the idea of infinite possibilities and timeless moments—a philosophy she applies to her own life.

Her academic path led her to Friend’s University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Organization, Management, and Leadership in 2004. Shortly thereafter, she embarked on a distinguished career in the United States Air Force, serving for nearly 15 years. Following her military service, she brought her leadership and expertise to the Department of Defense, excelling in the field of procurement.

Now retired, J.O. embraces the freedom to prioritize what matters most: family, creativity, and exploration. Traveling in her Class C motorhome with Blu by her side, she reconnects with friends and discovers new inspiration along the way.

For Black History Month, J.O. encourages others to honor their journeys and trust in the natural unfolding of life’s path. “We are all writing our stories one moment at a time. The key is to be present, embrace change, and never stop dreaming.”

As she continues her creative journey, J.O. Ballance is a reminder that it’s never too late to evolve, explore, and inspire.
